Rough Mix / Open Up the Doors!

Ok - here's a rough mix preview of a song that will be on the CD, Neil Brewer and Friends are Back in School!

"Rough mix" means that not all of the instruments have yet been added, and the sound levels of things like drums and voices are not yet placed in proper perspective with each other. All of that will happen in the final mix.

When the song is finished, you'll hear a lead trumpet piece, and then a lead electric guitar in the spots in the middle of the song that are now filled in with a background horn section (nicely played by members of The South Central High School band!)

I hope you enjoy it, and perhaps you can send a vote in via e-mail to neil@neilbrewer.com on whether or not I should keep the song going all the way to the end, (where we all fell apart and I laughed about it) or if should have the studio engineer simply fade the song out before we get that far!

Open up the Doors       Words & Music Neil Brewer 2006

Well, my mother said that it was like a' tryin’ to move a mule –

gettin’ me and my two brothers up to go to school,

with my sister in the bathroom, campin’ in the shower -

using every single drop of hot water that was ours.

So, we’d stand there in the hallway – that’s how the day’d begin,

screamin, “Open up the door, ‘cause it’s time to let us in!”

Open up the door! Open up the door! – C’mon sister…

Open up the door! Open up the door!

We’d stand there in the hallway – that’s how the day’d begin

Screamin, “Open up the door, ‘cause it’s time to let us in!”

Well, soon enough, the four of us ‘be standin’ in the street –

waitin’ on the bus in the rain or the sleet

just’a hopin’ it would get there before we were froze,

or the rain had added twenty pounds of water to our clothes.

Many times that bus would roll up – we’d be soakin’ to the skin,

screamin, “Open up the door, ‘cause it’s time to let us in!”

Open up the door! Open up the door! – Mr. Bus Driver…

Open up the door! Open up the door!

Many times that bus would roll up – we’d be soakin’ to the skin,

screamin, “Open up the door, ‘cause it’s time to let us in!”

(Here's where that trumpet and guitar will show up!)

Well, we went to school for years, and we learned a lot of stuff –

the day finally came when I guess we’d learned enough,

‘cause they gave us a robe and a little square hat, and said,

“You’re ready for the real world.” We said, “Imagine that!”

It was Graduation Day, we all began to shout,

“Teachers, open up the doors, ‘cause it’s time to let us out!!”

Open up the doors! Open up the doors! – C’mon teachers …

Open up the doors! Open up the doors!

It was Graduation Day - we all began to shout,

“Teachers, open up the doors, ‘cause it’s time to let us out!!”

It was Graduation Day - we all began to shout,

“Teachers, open up the doors, ‘cause it’s time to let us out!!”

On your Graduation Day, you know you’re gonna’shout:

“Teachers, open up the doors, ‘cause it’s time to let us out!!”

(Lots of electric guitar and lead trumpet to join in until end ... )
